WHAT IS AURORA MORTIS?

I know you’ve been wondering. Or maybe not. But I’m gonna talk about it anyway. So what exactly is Aurora Mortis? If you’re looking for a literal translation, it means “Dawn of Death” in Latin. But to expand on that, it’s a culmination of events that led me to be able to work on something that means so much to me. It’s a passion project that I’m quite proud of.

Since I was 7-years-old (currently 32), my dream has been to release a rap album. From filling up composition books with countless rhymes, putting together rough mixtapes, to finally releasing my debut album last July, Audiovile, the journey has simultaneously been long and short. But the long and short of it is, I won’t be stopping anytime soon.

Many a night I would spend staring at the stars wondering what to do with myself. I don’t think I’m alone in that. And when I dropped my EP Rivalry this past January, I knew that finding my style was going to take a lot more work. So I decided to dig deep in the vault of my mind and ask myself what exactly it was that I wanted to focus on musically. Even before Audiovile dropped, I had planned on this big project. One that would show people what I’m capable of but also something that could provide a great challenge for me to pull off.

Aurora Mortis encompasses a wide variety of different influences from every walk of life. It tells a story both directly and indirectly. It takes you to a far off land, filled with fantasy and dread, but somehow simultaneously providing insight and hopefulness.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of dark fantasy, medieval themes, and the FromSoftware library of games. It’s all held a special place in my heart for a long time. And if you’re wondering what this album is going to sound like, imagine throwing all those things into a cauldron of chaos mixed with historical moments in time, obscure movie references, epic orchestral sounds, a whole lot of horrorcore, and a slew of other thoughts that I thrown down on paper at 2AM when I can’t sleep.

Audiovile was a brain dump, Rivalry was a homage to battle rap, and Aurora Mortis will be a concept album the likes of which has not been heard before.

In future posts I will explain the lore behind the project and more specifically its anti-hero, Erdinus Athelard. Stay tuned.

Later,

-Sam
